War of the Unknown Warriors - Memories of Britain 1939-45 War of the Unknown Warriors - Memories of Britain 1939-45
The book's title War of the Unknown Warriors comes from a BBC wartime broadcast by Winston Churchill whose country home, Chartwell in Kent, was given to the National Trust as a memorial to the nation's struggle in war. That struggle took place in the countryside, on the beaches, in the towns and cities, on landed estates and in great houses. The places described in this book extend from the rugged coastline of Northan Ireland to the White Cliffs of Dover, and from humbler dwellings in Birmingham, Liverpool or London to some of the nation's grandest stately homes. The memories range from evacuation to D-Day and from the dark depths of near-defeat to the euphoria of victory. There are some famous names within these pages, but most people who have contributed their recollections and their photographs were ordinary men, women and children who found themselves living in extraordinary times.
