The Society

The 1940's Society hold regular meetings with lectures and discussions on different aspects of the 1940's. Despite the Home Front being of particular interest to members, subjects vary widely and have included lectures on French escape lines and the Russian Front. Regular film evenings are also popular with classic wartime films and propaganda shorts being shown.

Meetings are informal and friendly with refreshments and cakes always proving to be popular.

The Society also produce a regular magazine for members which includes up to date information and news & views for those interested in 1940's issues.

Membership is £15 for those in the UK with an additional contribution for postage costs required by overseas members (sorry).

I am always interested to hear from individuals
or groups who have specialist knowledge
and would be able to give an informal talk or
lecture to our members.
Please Contact me if you can help.

Meetings take place at Otford Village Memorial Hall, Otford, Near Sevenoaks, Kent
and start at 8pm.

Remarkable Accounts from Britains Darkest Days
Carol Harris

In September 1939 massive air raids
against civilians were anticipated. Cities
and strategic ports were the first to be hit and London was a major target throughout the war.
But it was not only the capital that suffered: on 8 November 1940 30,000 incendiary bombs rained down on Coventry. Port cities such as Plymouth, Bristol and Liverpool also suffered especially badly.
Carol Harris has collected a remarkable series of accounts from these darkest days with heart-warming stories of survival, perseverance, solidarity and bravery. She will be sharing some of these accounts with us to give us a very personal and down to earth view of one of the most important and destructive periods in Britains History.
Don’t miss what is sure to be an excellent and informative evening.

8pm at Otford Memorial Hall near Sevenoaks, Kent.
