Of all the escapes that took place during World War Two , The mass escape from Stalag Luft 3 on 24th March 1944 is the most infamous. A massive search was undertaken by the German authorities and of the 76 who escaped 50 were murdered in cold blood by the Gestapo.

'The Great Escape' is well known to many, largely due to the film of the same name. Unfortunately the film is a 'hollywood' version of events and not accurate in many respects.

This account, first published in 1952, gives an insight into life in Stalag Luft 3 and the tremendous effort involved in the building of the tunnels and escape equipment.

The last chapter details the efforts after the war to bring those that carried out the brutal murders to justice.

In today's modern, comfortable world, it is difficult to imagine life in the harsh regime of a German POW camp.
Death was always close by and food was scarce. As well as giving a fascinating account of the escape this book helps us to remember what these men went through and how many of them gave the ultimate sacrifice.
